Wipro Science Education Fellowship (UK)

The UK SEF program was started in 2018, following wide consultations with representatives from UK Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the education department, academia, and educational experts.

Teacher recruitment and retention in STEM subjects esp. in government identified ‘cold spots’ (i.e. regions of low social mobility) was identified as a priority area, across various stakeholders

Following a detailed due diligence process, we initiated partnerships with two public research universities:

Kings College London (KCL): To develop and launch UK’s first Masters in STEM Education Program and offer up to 15 bursaries per year to in-service and early-career STEM teachers

Sheffield Hallam University (SHU): To develop and run Wipro STEM Teacher Fellowship and Wipro Teacher Mentor Program to improve the pedagogic and subject knowledge of STEM teachers and create a robust mentoring program in Sheffield and neighboring areas.

Both partnerships aim to address the UK-wide shortfall in filling STEM roles in school and the teacher shortage in STEM subjects; and have progressed well over the last 2.5 years.

Kings College London (KCL)

Kings College London (KCL) is a reputed public research university often ranked among the top 25-30 Universities globally & in the top 10 in the UK. Their School of Education, Communication & Society has been at the forefront of teacher education and education research in England for many decades; and has a dedicated Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

UK’s first MA STEM Education program was set up by KCL with support from Wipro in 2018. Following a successful launch in 2019, the program is now in its second year.

In addition to the development of the program, we have supported twenty seven bursaries to date, enabling teachers from across the UK to study on the MA STEM Education program.

The list of bursary awardees reflects diversity across STEM subjects, in grades (e.g. primary-12th), and in geographical location. Several awardees work in ‘cold spot’ regions or in other areas outside the bigger cities. All awardees are committed to school senior leadership and show great passion for STEM education. Many of the 1st cohort students have already taken leadership roles in their respective schools and community.

Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) is a public research university and a major hub of education in Northern UK  (8th largest in the UK), surrounded by many ‘cold-spots’ such as Doncaster, Oldham & Bradford.

It provides more than 1,000 qualified teachers each year across all age groups, to the local region. Sheffield Institute of Education (SIoE) has received an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted for early years’ teacher training & primary teacher training and ‘Good’ for secondary training.

The Wipro Teacher Fellows Program (for early-career STEM teachers) and Teacher Mentors Program (for expert/experienced teachers of STEM subjects from local schools who wish to become effective mentors) aims to support in-service teachers to develop their practice in an evidence-based, individualized program of professional learning. The program lasts 18-24 months, during which the Fellows improve their subject and pedagogical knowledge, develop, trial, and evaluate innovative ways of teaching their subject, deepen their understanding of teaching through curriculum development and carry out a long-term inquiry into their practice, with optional accreditation at MA level.

The program was formally launched in early 2019 with the 1st cohort of 24 Teachers & Mentors. A second, larger cohort of 35 Teachers-Mentors was on-boarded in early 2020, based on increased interest in local schools.

Periodic evaluations of the program have shown consistently good ratings from the participants and various stakeholders.
